What is a Double Doodle?
A double doodle is when two doodles breed. A Labradoodle breeding with another Labradoodle is considered a double doodle just like a Goldendoodle breeding with a Bernadoodle is a double doodle.
What are the benefits of a Double Doodle?
A doodle is a mix between any breed of dog and a Poodle. Therefore, a Labradoodle is when a Labrador and a Poodle breed. A Goldendoodle is when a Golden Retriever and a Poodle breed. There are all sorts of doodles! Bernadoodles, Sheepadoodles, Aussiedoodles, Cavapoos, etc. This is done to get the characteristics of both breeds, i.e. the Labrador’s desire to please the family and the Poodle’s non-shedding hypoallergenic qualities. With first generations breeding (a Poodle with a Labrador) it is typical some of the puppies do not acquire all the qualities meaning some of the puppies may still shed hair and allergens. Double Doodles are multigenerational doodles therefore it is highly unlikely that the puppies will shed hair or any significant allergens typically associated with dander and fur
What generation are your Double Doodles?
Our family pets are Barley who is an F2 Labradoodle (both parents are F1 Labradoodles) and Hops who is an F1 Portidoodle (a Portuguese Water Dog & Poodle mix). Because Portuguese Water Dogs have similar hypoallergenic and non-shedding qualities to Poodles this is almost like doing a back cross with a Poodle to increase those desirable qualities. It gets confusing as to what exactly to label these breeds sometimes and these puppies may be considered an F2b or F3. It is probably most accurate to just consider them multigenerational doodles. One of the benefits of crossing different breeds of dogs is that breed specific genetic problems are less likely to be prevalent since the familial gene pool is being expanded. Our puppies have not only the two typical breeds involved that most doodles have, but include a third, Portuguese Water Dog, and hence a more robust familial genetic history.
Will the puppies shed?
It is highly unlike the puppies will shed because neither Poodles nor Portuguese Water Dogs shed and they are both hypoallergenic. The Labrador mix in our puppies is the only shedding breed and is only 25% of the genetic make-up on average (similar to F1b). We have had 16 puppies thus far and none have shed.
Do you offer any guarantees?
Absolutely! We want to make sure both the families and the puppies are happy with their new situation. If, for any reason, in the first 2 weeks you feel this is not the best fit for you or the puppy or if your vet finds any health issues we were unaware of, please call us. We will welcome the puppy back to our home and give you all the money you spent with us back. If you are unhappy after 2 weeks, please also call us right away. We will work with you on a case by case basis to find the best solution as we always want you and the puppy happy.
Are you a puppy mill?
No! Not even close! We only had one family pet, Barley before a family member became very ill and could no longer take care of her pet, Hops. We had not decided to spay or neuter when they decided to mate without our knowledge or encouragement. Once we realized, it was too late and 63 days later we welcomed 8 puppies. It has been nothing but a blessing though and we are so appreciative of the experience. The process has answered so many questions our children (8 & 11) had about the biological process of life as well as about the sanctity of life, nurturing another creature and financial responsibility. We have allowed them to use this opportunity to make and save money which we put in a ROTH IRA account for them to use when they are older for college, a new business loan or a down payment on a house. We will let our pets breed as a natural process until the time that we feel it will begin to impact their quality of life. In the meantime, we will enjoy watching the fullness of life it provides them as well as the connections and bonding they would otherwise not have
